While working in the pediatric ward of a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, in the late 1980s, I observed that many patients’ mothers were single parents, without child support, living in shacks falling apart. The children would be admitted to the hospital, treated, and discharged — and then the children would be readmitted, sometimes within weeks. This was a vicious cycle. Vera understood that to break this vicious cycle, traditional healthcare, not only in Brazil but elsewhere in the world, was not enough
